In 1906, the Georgia Legislature, via a special act, established an institution for higher learning in Valdosta. But, there were no appropriations made for any buildings or any maintenance until 1911 when the State of Georgia had $30,000 appropriated for a constructing and some equipment.

The enthusiasm of the group continues and the Metropolis of Valdosta initially donated land of about 60 acres and a few cash for use for establishing the college. Its first constructing called the Converse Hall was constructed at a cost of about $55,000. Finally, in 1912, the Georgia Legislature granted sufficient appropriation for its maintenance and the future of the school was solidified. The faculty was referred to as the South Georgia State Normal School and opened its doorways to younger girls on the 2nd of January, 1913 providing 2-years of college.

In 1922, one other act of the Georgia Legislature modified the name to Georgia State Girl’s College at Valdosta and gave authorization for a four-yr program that lead to a college degree. In 1950, the varsity’s Board of Regents made the varsity co-academic and the name was then once more changed to Valdosta State College.

The Valdosta State School was named a regional college in 1993 and in 1998 Valdosta State College went to the semester system together with the opposite units of the University System in Georgia.
