Earlier this year, President Obama approved a program that is going to put $6 billion over the next five years into NASA. He promised this program will produce at least 2,500 new jobs along what’s called the Space Coast of Florida alone. One of the most important aspects of this program though is how and where this new funding will be directed. This is very good news for Atmospheric and Space Scientists.
Let’s start by making one thing perfectly clear. This type of scientist isn’t only concerned about the void in space or if there’s any atmosphere at all on Mars. Actually, Atmosphere and Space Scientists are even more concerned about things right here on earth. They study such things as air pollution, global warming and the Earth’s own weather patterns even more than what is on the surface of our other planets. If you need more information about graduate degree programs. look on the internet.
These kinds of researchers specialize in the study of a planet’s ecosystem, particularly the air and what affects it. They interpret data, maps and charts to predict our weather. They are also trying to develop working theories on what causes everything from hurricanes to Amany others. They also work for a number of media outlets and any industry where the atmosphere is an important consideration (from food to jet liners).
One interested in the profession should come out of high school with strong scores in the STEM fields (science, engineering, technology, math). As a STEM profession, grants and scholarships are also available from many other sources outside of one’s standard Pell, SEOG and similar state and federal programs. One should look at the National Science Foundation for starters, and also talk to college financial aid officers for more. Many resources are available when researching distance learning online degree.
While very few schools offer Bachelor degrees specifically in the science there are a large number of on campus and online colleges that have Physics courses that fulfill the main core curriculum. The best way to choose the right 4-year program is to go to the National Weather Foundation and research the schools that fill the need.
Now one could find employment at this point, such as a media weatherman or working for a number of government agencies. Still, if one wants to go on to NASA, a post-graduate degree is definitely order. Another important point is to make sure one takes all courses deemed required by the National Weather Foundation.
While the field is still considered small, thanks to the President’s initiatives as well as air pollution concerns, the number of jobs openings is increasing faster than the national average. Just between 2008 and 2009, the Bureau of Labor Statistics increased the rate of growth from 15% to somewhere between 14-19%. Salary in the occupation ranges from $39,000 to a mean wage of $55,000 on to over $100,000 for the top 10 percentile.Understanding all you can about accredited college degree may be the key to your success.
In all, it looks like there’s a very sunny future for Atmospheric and Space Scientists. The thing is they can back it up thanks to programs like the one the president just proposed at Space City.
