A police officer is a public servant. Patrolling areas to ensure that peace and safety are kept and helping solve crimes while gathering evidence are some things you can expect to do. Being in charge of arresting criminals, working with crime victims, patrolling a given space and sometimes directing traffic will also be your mandate.

If you want to join the force, you will most likley need to earn your associate’s degree, which can be done in 2 years. In 4 years, you could also earn a criminal justice degree which is what many police officers decide to do. Being an American citizen as well as being over 20 are other police officer requirements. It is also beneficial for anyone to be able to speak more than one language well.

Your different evaluations will include written, mental, physical and psychological components. You will then need to go on to police officer training once you make it through all the tests, and your department will regulate if you need to train 3 months up to a year.

Additionally you need to realize that the lives of all people and animals are important. You need to be able to hold an objective position at essential times. A dedication to uphold the law is also important, as are integrity and honesty.
